First Lady’ Teacher of India Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Phule was an Indian social reformer, educationalist, and poet from Maharashtra. She is regarded as the first female teacher of India. Along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she played an important role in improving women’s rights in India. She is regarded as the mother of Indian feminism. Phule and her husband founded the first Indian girls’ school in Pune, at Bhide wada in 1848. She worked to abolish the discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender. She is regarded as an important figure of the social reform movement in Maharashtra.

Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule

Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, also known as Jyotiba Phule, was an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. His work extended to many fields including eradication of untouchability and the caste system, and women’s emancipation. On 24 September 1873, he, along with his followers, formed the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Seekers of Truth) to attain equal rights for people from lower castes. People from all religions and castes could become a part of this association which worked for the upliftment of the oppressed classes. Phule is regarded as an important figure in the social reform movement in Lagrange. He and his wife, Savitribai Phule, were pioneers of women education in India. He is mostly known for his efforts in educating women and lower caste people. Phule started his first school for girls in 1848 in Pune at Tatyasaheb Bhide’s residence or Bhidewada.

Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj

Shahu (also known as Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj or Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj) GCSI GCIE GCVO of the Bhonsle dynasty of Marathas was a Raja (reign. 1894 – 1900) and the first Maharaja (1900-1922) of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, also known as Rajarshi Shahu was considered a true democrat and social reformer. Greatly influenced by the contributions of social reformer Jyotiba Phule, Shahu Maharaj was an able ruler who was associated with many progressive policies during his rule. From his coronation in 1894 till his demise in 1922, he worked for the cause of the lower caste subjects in his state. Primary education to all regardless of caste and creed was one of his most significant priorities.

Shree Narayana Guru

Shree Narayana Guru, née Nanu, was born on August 28, 1855 to an Ezhava peasant, Madan Asan and his wife Kuttiyamma, in the village of Chempazhanthy near Thiruvananthapuram, in the erstwhile state of Travancore, in British India. His early education is known to be in the gurukula way under Chempazhanthi Mootha Pillai during which time his mother died when he was 15. At the age of 21, he went to central Travancore to study under a known Sanskrit scholar from the Puthuppally Varanappally family, by name, Raman Pillai Asan, who taught him Vedas, Upanishads, as well as the literature and logical rhetoric of Sanskrit. He returned to his village in 1881 when his father was seriously ill, and started a village school where he taught local children which earned him the moniker, Nanu Asan. A year later, he married Kaliamma but soon disassociated himself from the marriage to commence his public life as a social reformer.

Guru Ravidash

संत रविदास का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के वाराणसी में हुआ था. रविदास  की माता का नाम कलसा देवी और पिता का नाम श्रीसंतोख दास जी था. रविदासजी के जमाने में दिल्ली में सिकंदर लोदी का शासन था. कहते हैं सिकंदर लोदी ने उनकी ख्याति से प्रभावित होकर उन्हें दिल्ली आने का निमंत्रण भेजा था, लेकिन उन्होंने बड़ी विनम्रता से ठुकरा दिया था.

संत रविदास जी आडम्बर और बाह्याचार के घोर विरोधी थे. वे मूर्तिपूजा, तीर्थयात्रा आदि में बिल्कुल यकीन नहीं करते थे. वे व्यक्ति की निश्छल भावना और आपसी भाईचारे को ही सच्चा धर्म मानते थे. यही कारण है कि रविदासजी की काव्य-रचनाओं में सरलता के साथ व्यावहारिकता का समर्थन मिलता है.
